Since 1998, Prof. Hans Günter Gassen, graduated in chemistry, is Director of the Institute of Biochemistry at Darmstadt University of Technology and Coordinator for Biotechnology at the Hessian Technology Foundation.
His main scientific emphasis is on molecular biology and pathophysiology of the brain.
He studied chemistry and holds a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry (enzymology) from Marburg University. Then, he went for research at the Oak Ridge Laboratory, USA, and worked at the Max Planck Institute of Experimental Medicine in Göttingen. After he habilitated at Münster University, Prof. Gassen was appointed C4 Professor and Head of the Chair of Biochemistry at Darmstadt University of Technology.
From 1986 – 1992, Prof. Gassen headed the Research Alliance “Applied Genetic Technology (Angewandte Gentechnik)” with Röhm AG, Merck AG and Grünenthal AG; from 1992 – 1998, he presided the Biochemistry Group of the German Association of Chemists (GDCh).
Prof. Gassen is Founder and Partner of B.R.A.I.N. GmbH, GENIUS GmbH, N-Zyme GmbH and ESPLORA GmbH.
Apart from the publication of approx. 300 scientific articles and specialized books, Prof. Gassen works on a honorary basis in renown commissions like e.g. Research and Ethics Council of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), Senate Commission of Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), as well as in advisory boards, like e.g. the Advisory Board of the Research Institute Karlsruhe, Biotechnology Board of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Scientific Board for Novel Food BgVV.
